How My Boy Kicked Autism
Chapter 2 Vaccine Schedule (The First 12 months)
My Boy Blank - Day Thirty - 1 month:
Mommy took you to Dr. Dreadful for your first routine check up which included the second in the series of three HepB vaccines. She reports that you were very brave, no tears, unphased. She is amazed because Sassy was so traumatized by her first shot that both mommy and I have to go with her to Dr. Dreadful. Not only is she scared but she is usually so sore and tired when we get her home. You look like you are too. I am astonished how your sister just understands and keeps giving you very tiny kisses.
My Boy Blank - Day Sixty One- 2 months:
My little boy Blank is fussy when I get home from work. Mommy took you back to Dr. Dreadful today for routine vaccine visit 2. We should have preferred parking at Dreadful’s office-between you and Sassy, we seem to be there a lot. The least they could do is validate.
I sat with you and Sassy in the rocker and we read Pinkaliscious http://elizabethkann.com/?page_id=3 to you while your mom took a nice soak in the bath. Sassy is so into pink right now I could not get her to agree to read anything else. I wonder what your favorite color will be.
Later, for participation in an autism genetic research study comparing siblings, Frank went back and amended some journal entries to include a list of Sassy’s developmental milestones. The Amendments are represented in green. For a list of typical developmental patterns see, http://www.howkidsdevelop.com/developSkills.html#devMilestone. My Girl Sassy-2 months: grasp reflex, coo, vocal response to mommy’s voice and smiling. Same vaccine schedule.
My Boy Blank-Day One Hundred Twenty Two- 4 months: Today I took you to Dr. Dreadful for routine vaccine visit 3,
My Girl Sassy-4 months: sit up straight, babble, recognize Mommy and Daddy’s voice/touch, some visual sign of memory. Both children loved to swing at this age. Only commonality thus far besides vaccine schedule.
My Boy Blank -Day One Hundred Eighty One-6 months: Happy half-birthday Blank. Guess what Dr. Dreadful has for you in your 6-month of life?… you guessed it…shots!
The good news is that we don’t have to come back for 6 months. The bad news is that I owe your mom a dollar because she bet me you wouldn’t even flinch and I have never seen anyone more stoic. Already you are a braver man than me. Also a thinner one, you weighed in below average, maybe that means you luckily have your mom’s genes.
My Girl Sassy-6 months: average weight, signs of separation anxiety, imitating sound, recognizing us, sound resembled a one syllable word.
My Boy Blank -Day Three Hundred and Sixty Five -12 months: I can’t believe you are a one year old. Today marks
My Girl Sassy-12 months: pincer grasp, several word comprehensions, still can’t say papa but says mama, association between names and objects.
Blank’s pediatrician administered vaccines according to the
This schedule has gone up by over the last 20 years. This family did not ask about any risk-factors associated with vaccines. The pediatrician, who is Ivy League educated with distinction, albeit 30 years ago, did not present any information to the family regarding the current controversy over vaccines including the medical risk/benefit factors, the prospect of vaccinating at a later age, the option of vaccines being separated and free of thimerosal (mercury) , or the possibility of administering vaccines after different stages of Blank’s development.
