Chapter 3: Warning Signs
Over the next several months, Blank was detached from his parents. He would not make eye contact with anyone, he was sensitive to sound, he was solitary, having no viable means of communication. Resultantly, he began exhibiting aggressive, self- stimulatory and self-injurious behaviors. He would bang his head at times or hit his Mother and sister. Sometimes he would even hit himself.
By age 2, Blank’s s parents could not help but worry. Blank would not play nice with his sister, he was biting himself to a point of drawing blood and he would run away at any given time if left unsupervised, even for a second. Worry turned quickly to fear and fear drove Blank’s family to action.
Both by nature and trade Frank is a solution-oriented man. He started researching Blank’s seemingly atypical behaviors and discovered that many of them to hallmark traits of children with autism. Devastated by his initial research findings, he realized that autism was not considered in the original parenting plan and that they needed a new plan of action, stat! Overwhelmed by the plethora of conflicting information out there about causation, treatment, vaccines, funding, research, support, diet, etcetera, Frank realized he was ill-equipped to solve this problem on his own.
